Letters, 1869-1878.

Handwritten and signed letters dated 14 July 1869 and 16 Jan. and 30 Jan. 1878. Two of the items are addressed to Gerald Graham (1831-1899) and one is addressed to Graham's wife. In the 1869 missive, Gordon criticizes William Jervois, the Director of Works and Fortifications. "I took the opportunity of attacking Jervois and I think I have exposed his arbitrary ways. ... I think big wigs who fear him rather enjoyed his being tackled." The letter of 16 Jan. 1878 describes Gordon's activities at Galatz, where he was a member of an international commission for the improvement of navigation on the Danube River. The 30 Jan. 1878 letter was written from Khartoum. Gordon writes about his impressions of the city and about his opinion that it might be necessary for him to go to Cairo.
